Thanksgiving: A Whale of a Holiday

Michael Donato, November 23, 2016 -

It’s a special occasion. You’re probably not driving anywhere for a while, and you’re having a big meal. You’re with friends and family. These are some of the myriad reasons why Thanksgiving is becoming a holiday for whales.

I ran a query to look at the top rated beers that users have rated on all the Thanksgivings in our database and found quite a few top rated beers on the list.

Nice beers if you can get them from up and down the leaderboard. There are more check-ins for these beers on Thanksgiving because it’s always fun to share, and most of these have increased volume on Black Friday as well, though that’s probably inflated by the release of Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout. Of course that’s not necessarily a beer you race home and drink right away either.

It might just be the smaller sample, but all of these already highly rated beers are actually rated just a bit higher on Thanksgiving. We’re always talking about how situation affects the taste of your beer, and where better than sharing a bottle with friends and family?

If you look strictly at volume of beer check-ins on Thanksgivings you get a different list, most populated with the cooler-filler beers you typically see at gatherings.

Some garbage beer, some Sam Adams holiday pack stuff, the ever-present Guinness and the recently released Celebration and Breakfast Stout. There’s nothing super special about this list, it’s mostly a list of higher-volume beer available in the store at this time of year.

So do you have a high-alcohol whale you’re planning to share on Thanksgiving or are you planning to chug a dozen Winter Lagers?

Michael can be found on Twitter and Untappd and hoping to grab a bottle of Alementary Figgy Pudding for Thanksgiving. You can also email him at beer@ceetar.com.
